CHARACTER INFORMATION
NAME: Alexander Summers
CANON: Marvel Comics
CANON REFERENCE: Havok on the Marvel Wiki
AGE: 25
GENDER: Male
YEAR IN SCHOOL/FACULTY POSITION: Geology/Geophysics teacher

APPEARANCE: Alex in-costume

PERSONALITY: Alex is what some might call 'carefree,' and others would refer to as 'irresponsible.' But he'd probably punch anyone who said the latter to his face. His adoptive family has encouraged him to find his own path, and as a result, he's taken a rather relaxed approach to life. When new situations come his way, he tries to roll with them and adapt, letting them shape his reactions rather than reacting to them ahead of time. While this approach doesn't always work out for the best, it has taught him a few lessons in his life, which is why he continues with it. It's also part of the reason he went for his degree, rather than the football scholarship he entered college on.

That isn't to say that Alex isn't driven and devoted when he wants to be. If he finds a cause or goal that appeals to him, he works towards it. When he first enrolled in college, he took some geology courses to balance out his schedule, and found them so engaging that he changed his major to Geophysics, and earned his Master's degree in a respectable amount of time. Likewise, once he found out that he could control his powers, he worked constantly to do so, until the focus it took to keep them from exploding out of control came as naturally as breathing.

One thing that does bother Alex, however, is being held to expectations that don't apply to him. Before his family truly accepted him, he was constantly pushed to fill the role of their recently deceased son, a boy Alex had never known. The role was an ill-fit, and he constantly chafed against the assumptions that came with it, developing a bit of a chip on his shoulder. Likewise, when his brother Scott lectures him on not meeting certain unreasonable expectations, an argument will ensue, sometimes leading to blows.

The few times Alex really gets angry, he definitely goes half-cocked. He will even let loose with his powers simply because of how angry he gets, and has to make an effort to not let that happen, just to keep others from getting hurt just because he's throwing a tantrum. However, Alex can also push himself when angry, able to make his own powers more potent in execution, or even just motivate his actions even further. The risk-to-reward ratio, however, keeps him from letting himself get too angry.

Because of this, and his rather laissez-faire attitude, Alex ends up making friends in the unlikeliest of places. He does his best to be patient enough to get stubborn people to talk to him, even if things don't always pan out. Still, he'll be joking over lunch with some football players one moment, then talking about fluid dynamics with his academic peers the next. He may not be a perfect fit everywhere, but he makes do where he can.

POWERS/ABILITIES: Alex has the power to involuntarily absorb ambient energy from his surroundings, and process/convert it within his body's cells. His body can naturally utilize this energy for normal bodily processes in addition to the consumption of nutrients. When his cells reach maximum capacity, energy is radiated from his body in negligible quantities. Alex can consciously focus the energy he has absorbed, redirecting it into bursts of superheated plasma from his body. At the lowest power, he can increase heat at a dedicated target, which can cause headaches in living targets. At higher levels of concentration, this energy can explode outward from his body in all directions, or be focused into powerful blasts from his hands, superheating plasma to the point where contact will melt or shatter most standard substances.

His powers cause his body to absorb almost all types of energy, and give him a natural immunity to higher levels of heat and radiation. Also, his body temperature is naturally higher than human average. His powers require concentration to keep under control, though years of practice have made this level of concentration almost involuntary. They can still flare up when significantly startled. In combat, the costume he wears has a system built into it to help keep his powers in check, allowing him to focus his attention elsewhere.

In addition to his mutant powers, Alex possesses a wide variety of skills. He possesses a Master's degree in Geophysics, and is in peak physical condition. He is an accomplished surfer, an overall athlete, and wears flip-flops all year round. He is semi-fluent in Spanish, and can digest Taco Bell with no ill effect. He can play at least five guitar chords, one of which is a minor. He's an ace at beer pong, and can do a keg stand with only one friend helping.

He has a mild allergy to uncooked tomatoes. And he totally doesn't have a little brother complex.

He's never slept with a telepath. Ever.

AU HISTORY: The second son of Christopher and Katherine-Anne Summers, Alex was raised alongside his older brother, Scott. Scott was always told to keep an eye on Alex, as he was older and therefore considered more 'responsible.' Alex's childhood was comfortable and happy, but all that changed during a fateful plane trip with his father at the helm. An engine malfunction resulted in the plane going into a rapid descent, and without a second thought, his mother strapped Alex and Scott together into a single parachute and, telling Scott to take care of Alex, got them out of the plane in time to save them. It was the last time either of them would see their parents.

However, the chute was pulled a little late, and though they survived hitting the ground, both the boys suffered some memory loss, to the point where they didn't know who the other was, or much about themselves beyond their first names, when finally picked up by rescue workers. The boys were taken to an orphanage, but without definitive evidence of their relation, were separated when Alex was adopted by the Blanding family.

The Blandings, who had recently lost their son Todd in an accident, found Alex to look very similar to Todd, and initially pushed him into that role. Alex attempted to fill in for Todd as best as he could, wanting to keep the family he had gained, but found it to be an ill-fit. His only comfort was his new sister Haley, who accepted him as himself, and not as a fill-in for her late brother. Eventually, the Blandings came to terms with Todd's death, and encouraged Alex to be himself, even paying for therapy to help him undo the trauma-induced amnesia from his plane crash.

When Alex's powers manifested, he blasted a car that was bearing down on Haley, saving her life and keeping his parents from mourning another child. Though hesitant, they did accept Alex as a mutant, and actually tried to help by contacting the Xavier Institute. Xavier himself flew out for a visit, accompanied by Scott, and reintroduced the brothers while helping Alex to gain a basic understanding of his powers. However, Alex made the decision to stay with his family, at least until graduation, and promised to stay in contact with both the professor and his brother. He also spent a summer at the school, where Xavier helped him further fine-tune his powers, and Alex and Scott bonded further.

Alex continued on through high school, joining the varsity football team and earning himself a football scholarship to UC Berkeley in the process. However, once he began attending classes, Alex found himself interested in the world of geology and geophysics, and abandoned football to make it is major. He actually devoted enough time and energy to it that he completed the Master's program in a respectable amount of time, earning the praise of both his family and his brother.

After graduation, Alex spent some time relaxing and catching up with his family and old friends. During this time, he got a call from Scott, asking him if he'd be interested in a teaching position at the Institute. Though initially hesitant, Scott turned him onto the idea, even suggesting that he could train as a reserve X-Man. Convinced (or at least curious), Alex packed his things into his beat-up Volkswagen Bug, and began the drive cross-country.
